In 2001, when the show Farscape was still on the air, my wife Stacey made me a trenchcoat for Christmas. One that was modelled precisely after the one worn by John Crichton on the show. It was gorgeous.
In 2004, Virginia Hey, who played Zhaan, was signing autographs and taking pictures. So on Friday, I wore the coat to go see her. And when I asked for a picture with her, she instantly recognized it.
So she came out from behind her table and not only posed for a great pic but also checked out the coat. She was impressed that it was such an exact replica, but when she found out my wife had made it from scratch - she was amazed.
A little small-talk later, I walked away, thrilled. I had to call Stacey and tell her. While I'm on the cell phone, I notice that there's a lull in the autograph area. Asking her to hold for one moment, I screw up my courage and walk back to Virginia.
Holding out the phone with my hand over the receiver, I asked, "Would you make me a king among men and tell my wife some of the stuff you said to me?"
Virginia gets a big smile on her face and reaches for the phone. Now, I hadn't warned Stacey, obviously, so when Virginia says, "Stacey, dear, how are you?" all we hear is stunned silence for a few seconds.
But she quickly finds her voice - and they chatted for five minutes.
At least!
We've gotten other compliments on the coat to be sure, but that was by far the most memorable.
