A Different "Killer Breakfast"

Postby GermInBerea on Wed Mar 14, 2007 10:47 am

Story: A Different "Killer Breakfast"
Location: GenCon Milwaukee
Year: from 1996 until GenCon moved to Indy

For hotel registration, we generally wrote down hotels that were within close walking distance (back in the days when we had to fax in our hotel preferences). One year, we didn't fax our hotel reg early and we were relegated to the Ambassador Hotel...little did we know that this would become our hotel of choice at GenCon. When we arrived, we asked the hotel clerk where we could get a bite to eat. She suggested Michaels restaurant, and raved about their breakfast.

On the outside, Michaels seemed to be...well...a dive. Inside, the place was PACKED. We sat ourselves at a booth, and ordered the "$1.99" breakfast (2 eggs, bacon, hashbrowns, and toast...throw in coffee and it cost all of $2.50). Guess what? She was right. The breakfast was fantasic.

Every year after that, instead of searching for hotels within "safe" walking distance from the convention center, we found ourselves booking at the Ambassador or Embassy Suites...because they were right next door to Michaels. Every morning, we would drag ourselves out of bed at 6:00 in the morning, and shamble our way to Michaels. We would either walk to the convention center, or take the shuttle (when it was running). In the evening, we would take a cab ride home. Such was our dedication to the Michaels breakfast! Michaels ranks up there with the Safe House for our "hangout" experience in Milwaukee.

When GenCon moved to Indy, we weren't greiving at the loss of the city, but at the loss the traditional hangouts that we had come to accept as part of the "GenCon experience".

Thankfully, other establishments in Indy stepped in to fill that void...but we'll always have fond memories of the places like Michaels.

P.S. Don't believe me about the $1.99 breakfast? I posted a photo of it in the hangout photo section...check it out! The menu is complete with grease stains and all!
