R.A. Salvatore gets a phone call

Story: R.A. Salvatore gets a phone call

My favorite author is R.A. Salvatore. I have been reading his stories since 1992, and have read every one of his books. I have gone to his seminar every year I have attended Gencon (since 2002).

During his 2006 seminar, coincidentally while I was asking him a question about his Demonwars series, his phone rang. Mr. Salvatore sheepishly took the call. This is the conversation as I remember it:

"Hello? Well I am in the middle of giving a seminar..... Who is this?..... Is this Ed Greenwood? Who is this?"

At this point Bob starts laughing and says "OH! Hey!" finally figuring out who the mystery speaker is on the other end of the line. "Do you mind if everyone says hi to you?" he asks. Obviously the speaker said ok, because Mr. Salvatore pointed the phone at the audience and said "Everyone say hi to Curt Schilling!". The crowd complied, and much laughing and murmuring ensued.

Now Bob is from Massachusetts (as am I) and obviously a big Boston Red Sox fan (as am I). Curt is the star ace pitcher for the Red Sox, and he helped end "The Curse of the Bambino" in 2004. Combine this with the fact that both Curt and Bob are well known MMORPGers (as am I, although slightly less well known), it is no surprise they know each other, and are even friends.

It wasn't until 6 months later that I figured out why Curt was really calling him, when they announced the formation of Green Monster Games in partnership with Spawn creator Todd Mcfarlane. I know it was my most memorable moment from Gencon 2006, and I can't wait until Green Monster Games first MMORPG release!
My name IS Sidney Blumenthal
